Here are some of our favourite New Zealand camping spots to enjoy in 2023-24.

North Island

Matauri Bay Holiday Park

This campground is located on the beachfront in the North Island of New Zealand, about 30 kilometres northeast of Kerikeri. Matauri Bay Holiday Park is situated in a beautiful coastal location and is a great base for day trips to Cape Reinga. The area is also popular for activities such as walking, fishing, and water sports.

Hahei Holiday Resort

You can find this gem on the coast of the Coromandel Peninsula. The location is a short walk from one of the best beaches on the peninsula and offers stunning views of crystal clear waters, dramatic volcanic cliffs, the islands of Mercury Bay, and some beautiful caves. Hot Water Beach is only a ten-minute drive away. Also, it's worth getting up early to witness the sunrise from Te Pare Point.

Poukaraka Flats Campground, Waiheke Island

Poukaraka Flats Campground is located on Waiheke Island, at the southern end of the island. It is a great starting point for exploring the surrounding beaches, wetlands, forests, and reserves. The campsite has basic facilities, including flush toilets and cold showers, and you can bring your campervan with you on the ferry, parking for the night at Whakanewha Regional Park.

Matai Bay, Karikari Peninsula, Northland

Matai Bay on the Karikari Peninsula of the North Island is a popular destination for campers, fishing enthusiasts, and those interested in marine life. Snorkelling is a popular activity at the campsite, which is located in a beautiful area where you can see a variety of marine wildlife up close. The campsite operates on a first-come, first-served basis and is positioned near several picturesque walking tracks.

Opoutere Beach

The campsite at Opoutere Beach, on the Coromandel Peninsula, offers a peaceful and serene setting with white sand beaches, lush forests with native Pohutukawa trees, and a tranquil atmosphere. It is recommended to book in advance during peak tourist season as the region is very popular, experiencing a high influx of visitors.

Te Araroa Holiday Park

Te Araroa Holiday Park is a classic New Zealand camping ground in a beautiful setting surrounded by trees, gardens, and a freshwater stream. It is situated between Opotiki in the eastern Bay of Plenty region and Gisborne, and is a great location to view the majestic sunrise at the East Cape. The campsite has basic but functional facilities, providing everything you need for a peaceful camping trip.

South Island

Totaranui Campground, Abel Tasman National Park

Totaranui Campground is a beautiful campsite located along the Abel Tasman Coastal Walk. It is a great place to stay during the journey. The campsite extends from the golden-sand beaches to the estuary and is managed by the Department of Conservation. Advance bookings are required to stay.

Pohara Beach Holiday Park, Abel Tasman National Park

Pohara Beach Holiday Park is in the beautiful Golden Bay in the South Island, close to Abel Tasman National Park, Kahurangi National Park, and the picturesque Te Waikoropupu Springs. The beach becomes very busy during summer months as people come to see the turquoise waters. If you want a more peaceful experience, we advise you to visit just before the tourist season begins.

Akaroa Freedom Camping

Freedom camping in Akaroa is found just a short 5-minute walk from the harbour. Although views of the water are partially obstructed by a fence and boats, the site at the north end of the Akaroa harbour carpark is within walking distance of the town centre, where you can find restaurants, shops, and activities. The site is basic, but it provides a convenient location for exploring the area and can be expertly accommodated by Mojo Campervan equipment for your trip.
