What To Do On A Weekend Getaway To Mount Ruapehu

Found yourself with a few days off? If you’re looking for a weekend getaway that offers both relaxing and adventure activities this winter, then consider Mount Ruapehu! The famous peak and its surrounding areas are perfect for a long wintery adventure getaway in a Mojo van, and a chance to see some snow up close.

Only a three and half hour drive from Hamilton, we’ve put together a few things you need to check out when visiting.

Hitting the slopes at Turoa and Whakapapa ski fields

Ever wanted to ski or snowboard on an active volcano? Well, this is your chance! Now before you start getting worried, both ski fields take extra precautions to make sure that each day is safe to ski or board. If there’s any sign of potential disruption, they simply won’t let people onto the field so you can rest easy and enjoy the amazing slopes that Mount Ruapehu has to offer. If you’re a beginner, or with a family, Whakapapa is a great option for those who need to cut a few more pizza shapes or want an easy ride down. For those who are experienced riders and wanting something a bit more wild and mighty, Turoa is a good option for you.

Day hikes

Surrounded by rugged landscapes, waterfalls and native forests, there are some stunning day hikes for non-skiers, or those wanting a break from the slopes. The first one being the famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing, which is considered one of the best day hikes in New Zealand. Unfortunately from May to October, snow and ice means those who are only alpine experts can go, or if you really don’t want to miss out you can look at going with an experienced guide. But don’t worry, there are plenty of other hikes worth doing including the Taranaki Falls track, a two-hour return loop track offering stunning mountain and waterfall views.

Visit Ohakune

Nestled at the foot of Mount Ruapehu, Ohakune or the “carrot capital” as locals like to refer to it, is a cute, laid back town offering great accommodation, shops and outdoor activities. If you want to start exploring, take a trip down memory lane and discover some of the old railway systems on the Ohakune Old Coach Road. Most people prefer to cycle, so we recommend bringing your own bikes (don’t forget you can rent a bike rack from us and pop it onto any of our vans) or you can rent bikes locally for the day. Stop in for a bite to eat at the Powderhorn Chateau, and warm up in front of their massive roaring fireplace over a glass of wine or hot chocolate. If you feel like splurging, you can stay overnight and enjoy the facilities (hello hot pool!) the place has to offer.
